Coming Soon: SQL Server 2016

Microsoft has announced the next major release of their flagship database and analytics platform, SQL Server 2016, will be made available for public preview this coming summer. SQL Server 2016 will provide “breakthrough performance for mission-critical applications and deeper insights on your data across on-premises and cloud,” according to Microsoft CSG T.K. “Ranga” Rengarajan.

Building on the ever popular and well-established SQL Server brand, this release comes with several new features including:

Always Encrypted – designed to help customers with data security and compliance, either on-premises or in the cloud, this feature protects data at rest and in motion with the master key residing with the application, increasing security for mission critical applications.

Stretch Database – technology allows you to dynamically stretch your warm and cold transactional data to Microsoft Azure, so your operational data is always available on-demand without needing application changes.

Real-time Operational Analytics & In-Memory OLTP – bringing together SQL Server’s in-memory technologies, it combines In-Memory OLTP with the in-memory columnstore for real-time operational analytics. It’s designed to tune your system for optimal transactional performance as well as increase workload concurrency delivering 100X faster queries with in-memory OLTP for in-memory performance and real-time operational analytics.

Built-in Advanced Analytics, PolyBase and Mobile BI – new build-in advanced database analytics provide the scalability and performance benefits of running “R” algorithms directly in SQL Server. The management and accessibility of big data continues to grow in importance. The addition of PolyBase, expands SQL Server’s functionality to use SQL queries to manage large relational and non-relational databases simply with T-SQL. This release also features the ability to gain faster business insights for your on-premises data through rich visualizations on mobile devices with native apps for Windows, iOS and Android.

Aside from these main features, SQL Server 2016 boasts additional capabilities including:

• Additional security enhancements for Row-level Security and Dynamic Data Masking to round out security investments with Always Encrypted.
• Improvements to AlwaysOn for more robust availability and disaster recovery with multiple synchronous replicas and secondary load balancing.
• Native JSON support to offer better performance and support for many types of data.
• Upgrades in performance, usability and scalability of SQL Server Enterprise Information Management (EIM) tools and Analysis Services.
• Faster hybrid backups, high availability and disaster recovery scenarios to backup and restore on-premises databases to Azure and placement of SQL Server AlwaysOn secondaries in Azure.

While the complete enhancements and capabilities of SQL Server 2016 are yet to be fully disclosed, Microsoft promises to deliver a platform that continues to make it easy for customers to manage their data.
